Recognizing September 17 as
Constitution Day
WHEREAS, the rights and liberties of the American people are enshrined in the Constitution of the United States of America, which embodies the principles of a government by the people dedicated to the rule of law; and
WHEREAS, Constitutional self-government places a tremendous degree of responsibility and trust upon the citizens who are to govern themselves; and
WHEREAS, informed citizens in every generation are necessary to exercise the civic responsibility and abiding commitment that will ensure the preservation and continuation of Constitutional self-government; and
WHEREAS, September 17, 2005 marks the 218th anniversary of the drafting of the Constitution of the United States of America; and
WHEREAS, Congress has designated September 17 as Constitution Day, and that educational institutions receiving federal funds must teach students about the Constitution on September 17, or on adjacent weeks in the event of a weekend or holiday on that date,
NOW, THEREFORE, on behalf of the City Council and the people of Lakewood, I, Steve Burkholder, Mayor of the City of Lakewood, Colorado, by virtue of the authority vested in me, do hereby recognize
September 17 as Constitution Day
in the City of Lakewood, and ask Lakewood citizens to learn and reaffirm the ideals that the framers of the Constitution had in 1787 by exercising our civic responsibilities and vigilantly protecting the freedoms guaranteed to us through the Constitution.
