Recognizing Block Buster Races
And the Hospice of Saint John

WHEREAS, the Hospice of Saint John serves families in the hour of their greatest need; and

WHEREAS, the Hospice offers alternative, supportive and loving care for the terminally ill and their families; and

WHEREAS, since 1977, the Hospice has served more than 20,000 patients and their families and has never turned away a family because of their inability to pay; and

WHEREAS, Saint John's is the second oldest freestanding hospice program in the United States; and

WHEREAS, Bea Khan Wilhite had the vision to organize the Block Buster Races in 1984 as a way to support the Hospice by raising money for its services and educating the public about the life-changing services Saint John's provides; and

WHEREAS, the races also are an annual celebration supported by the Union Square Merchants Association of Lakewood with several businesses along Union Boulevard providing volunteers for the race.

NOW, THEREFORE, on behalf of the City Council and the people of the City of Lakewood, I, Steve Burkholder, Mayor of the City of Lakewood, Colorado, by virtue of the authority vested in me, do hereby recognize the Block Buster Races and the Hospice of Saint John for their significant contributions to the community.
