P R O C L A M A T I O N
In Recognition of Ray Baker
WHEREAS, the Mayor and City Council desire to recognize Ray Baker as the recipient of the Tony Sabatini Citizenship Award; and
WHEREAS, the Tony Sabatini Award was created to honor Tony's numerous contributions to the community, and it is awarded to individuals who exemplify the highest quality of citizenship through their efforts to enhance the quality of life for residents; and
WHEREAS, Ray epitomizes the spirit of the award because of his selfless investment in the community, his consensus building and his skill in serving as a catalyst for the betterment of the community; and
WHEREAS, Ray is cofounder and president of the Gold Crown Foundation, whose mission is to provide opportunities and education to youth through sports and enrichment programs. Through Ray's vision and dedication, Gold Crown has built Coca-Cola All Star Park and the Gold Crown Field House, both premier venues that have provided more than 25,000 boys and girls with programs from art and computers to golf and basketball; and
WHEREAS, Ray's work has been deeply personal with him coaching championship
teams in girls' softball at Lakewood High School. His coaching abilities have
resulted in the Denver Post, Rocky Mountain News and the Jefferson County High
School Athletic Directors naming him "Coach of the Year"; and
WHEREAS, Ray has also provided steady, quiet leadership serving as chairman
of both the Denver Metropolitan Major League Baseball Stadium District and the
Denver Metropolitan Football Stadium District and as a member of the Colorado
Commission on Higher Education; and
WHEREAS, the positive role model he has provided to the youth and the community at large has been recognized by the Anti-Defamation League, which voted him "Man of the Year" in 1996, and by the Sportswomen of Colorado, which honored his "Outstanding Contribution to Women's Sports" in 1998; and
WHEREAS, Ray has charmed and persuaded civic and sports leaders throughout Colorado into investing in our most important asset - the youth of the community.
NOW, THEREFORE, on behalf of the City Council and the people of the City of Lakewood, I, Steve Burkholder, Mayor of the City of Lakewood, Colorado, by virtue of the authority vested in me, do hereby recognize Ray Baker for his vision, leadership and selflessness by awarding him the
TONY SABATINI CITIZENSHIP AWARD
