PROCLAMATION
Honoring Lakewood Girl Scout Troop 357 &
State Representative Betty Boyd for
Colorado's Newest State Emblem
Whereas, Colorado's patriotic colors are officially "set in stone," with the RED of the State Mineral Rhodochrosite (ROAD-uh-CROW-site), the BLUE of the State Gem Aquamarine, and now, the WHITE of the State Rock Yule Marble; and
Whereas, Girl Scout Troop 357 of Lakewood was instrumental in proposing Yule Marble as the State Rock, with the able assistance of State Representative Betty Boyd of Lakewood in the Colorado Legislature; and
Whereas, the girls and their enthusiastic leaders spent nearly 150 hours in research, service, travel, and enlisting support from prominent Coloradans for the Yule Marble proposal; and
Whereas, Representative Betty Boyd was so impressed with the girls' efforts and their desire to learn the legislative process to make a bill become law that she introduced and sponsored a bill to designate Yule Marble as the State Rock; and
Whereas, the girls were so polished in their testimony before a committee of the State Legislature that they were given a rare ovation, which combined with Representative Boyd's efforts led to the eventual passage of the bill and its signing into law on March 9, 2004; and
Whereas, as a fitting emblem of the great state of Colorado, Yule Marble is internationally recognized for its quality and for its use in the Lincoln Memorial and in the Tomb of the Unknowns in Washington, DC, as well as in many other prominent buildings around the country;
NOW, THEREFORE, on behalf of the City Council and the people of Lakewood, I, Steve Burkholder, Mayor of the City of Lakewood, Colorado, by virtue of the authority vested in me, do hereby proclaim our appreciation and honor to
LAKEWOOD GIRL SCOUT TROOP 357 & LEADERS
STATE REPRESENTATIVE BETTY BOYD
for their dedication, hard work, public service and outstanding example as
representatives of the Lakewood community.
GIVEN under my hand and Seal of the City of Lakewood, this 24th day of January
2005, A.D.
Stephen A Burkholder, Mayor
