MEETING MINUTES
Wednesday, November 17, 2004
Civic Center South Bldg.

CALL TO ORDER
Bob Zachman called the meeting to order at 4:00 p.m.
ROLL CALL
Members Present: Joan Howard, Letitia Williams, Kathy Berls, David Wiechman,
Donald Tallman, Bob Zachman, Steve Sumner, Paula Rutan, Bob Costello, Laurie
Maves, Paula Young, Caren Diebold, Zach Matyja
Absent: Laurie Moves,
HCA Staff: Niña Johnson, Susan Martin, Kim Kritz, Mike Buhler, Robin Anderson, Win Filipinas
Council Members: Debbie Koop and Barb Martin
The public comment book was out and made available for public sign in.
APPROVAL OF MINUTES
The minutes from October 20, 2004 commission meeting were approved by a unanimous
vote.
GOOD NEWS
· Round table with exhibit info, open houses, programs etc.
· Nina Johnson welcomed and introduced new staff member Karen White,
PT Arts Outreach Specialist.
· Commissioners will receive 20% off merchandise in the Holiday Gift Show good through the end of the year.
COMMISSIONER SPOTLIGHT - Zach Matyja
Zach gave a great presentation and treated the commissioners to a homemade cake
that was not only beautiful but also delicious.
STANDING COMMITTEE REPORTS
· Bob Zachman asked commissioners if they attended any committee meetings
this past month and if anyone made decisions on which committee they would like
to be on. It appeared that most commissioners are still looking.
OLD BUSINESS
· Mentor assignments are going well, most commissioners were able to
get together for a meeting.
· Bob Zachman gave a brief update on the HCA Alliance, stating that several
meetings need to be set up and nothing would happen until probably the first
of the New Year. Things that still need to be done are finalizing the by-laws,
complete a budget, and work with the IRS.
· The December 15th meeting will be a potluck; a sign-up sheet was passed
around. Commissioner will meet in the Orchard Room at the Visitor Center.
· Laurie Maves was voted onto the Executive Committee as 2nd Chair.
NEW BUSINESS
· Bob Zachman stated that the he attended a meeting of the Youth Commission
and is working as a liaison helping the commission become organized and efficient.
If you would like to attend a meeting they are held on the 1st and 3rd Tuesday
of each month, 7 p.m. at the Link Recreation Center.
· The Senior Citizen Advisory Commission contacted Bob Zachman. They
who would like to explore the possibility of doing some joint ventures in the
future or work towards open communication between the commissions. This commission
meets on the 2nd Wednesday of the month at the Starr Center, 4-6pm.
· The Cultural Diversity Commission invited our commission to attend
a show called "Death at Dinner". The cost is approximately $42-48
per person. December 1, 2004.
STAFF REPORTS
· Win Filipinas is hoping the commissioners will be attending the opening
reception of the permanent exhibit, "Spirit of Lakewood", December
10, 4:30-6:30pm at the Visitor Center (Invitations will be sent). Win is speaking
to the Lakewood Rotary Club tomorrow, hoping to get the Rotary Club to help
with funding to purchase fixtures for the Valentine Diner.
· Susan Martin stated that the performance by violinist Catlin Tulley
was amazing. Susan gave a brief update on upcoming performances. The Nutcracker
performances are selling well. Auditions for the Missoula Children's Theater
start January 24.
· Mike Buhler is getting ready for "Home for the Holidays"
on December 4, in the Visitor Center at the Heritage Center. Mike and Becky
Kosma are working on training volunteers for tours and new operational procedures.
Mike is still working on getting new sponsorships for next year.
· Robin Anderson stated that the Plaza Party & Dia De Los Muertors
Parade was a huge success, with great support from the community. The next exhibit
opening will be "Images of Isolation" by Chinese artist Su Xinping.
The Asian Arts Council has sponsored the show. Opening reception will be February
11, 5pm to 7pm.
· Niña Johnson stated that the totem sculpture that was donated
to the City of Lakewood would be placed at Bear Creek Lake Park Visitor Center.
The "Christmas Teas " program at the Heritage is sold out. The Historical
Luncheon program will be expanded due to a huge interest. Also, if anyone has
ideas regarding new programming for next year please feel free to pass any comment
or suggestions along to staff.
Meeting was adjourned at 5:45 p.m. by unanimous vote.
