RESOLUTION: 2004-67

SUBJECT: RTD's FastTracks Plan

RECOMMENDATION: Approval

SUMMARY AND BACKGROUND OF SUBJECT MATTER:

The Regional Transportation District (RTD) Is proposing a comprehensive transportation plan that will expand rapid transit in the metro area. The plan, known as FasTracks, will provide transportation alternatives for six of the most congested transportation corridors in the metro region. The West Corridor, from downtown Denver west to the Jefferson County government center is one of them.

Lakewood has long endorsed rapid transit along the West Corridor, which generally follows the existing rail line along 13th Avenue, juts south toward the Federal Center and then follows W. 6th Avenue to the Jefferson County administrative offices. Expected ridership along the West Corridor is 31,200 - 36,500 by 2025.

In order to implement this plan in an expedient manner, voters are being asked in November to approve a 4/10 of one cent sales tax increase - four cents on each $10 purchase.

Attached to this document are an information sheet on the plan, a map, and a packet of newspaper articles written about the issue.

Already on record as endorsing the FasTracks plan are the Alameda Gateway Association, the Jefferson County Board of Realtors, the Jefferson Economic Council, the West Chamber, the Jefferson County cities of Wheat Ridge, Arvada, Golden and Westminster. Other cities also endorsing the Plan are Boulder, Broomfield, Littleton, Sheridan, Aurora, Longmont, Louisville and Superior.

A list of businesses, organizations, elected officials and others endorsing the plan can be found at www.fastracks.org/endorsements.cfm
