HERITAGE, CULTURE & THE ARTS COMMISSION MEETING MINUTES
Wednesday, October 20, 2004

CALL TO ORDER
Bob Zachman called the meeting to order at 4:00 p.m.
ROLL CALL
Members Present: Joan Howard, Letitia Williams, Kathy Berls, David Wiechman,
Donald Tallman, Bob Zachman, Steve Sumner, Paula Rutan, Bob Costello, Laurie
Maves, Paula Young, Caren Diebold, Zach Matyja
Absent: None
HCA Staff: Niña Johnson, Susan Martin, Kim Kritz, Mike Buhler, Win Filipunas
Council Members: Debbie Koop
The public comment book was out and made available for public sign in.
APPROVAL OF MINUTES
The minutes from September 15, 2004 commission meeting were approved by a unanimous
vote.
Mayor Steve Burkholder thanked the commissioners for their dedication and support of the city.
GOOD NEWS
· Bob Zachman asked commissioners and staff to introduce themselves.
· Bob Zachman asked "experienced" commissioners to take time
to get to know the "new" commissioners. Take time to go to lunch or
coffee etc.
· Bob Zachman passed around "Thank You" notes from past commissioners
Cathy Te Slaa and Jennifer Sylman.
· Zach Matyja editor of the Commission Courier gave a brief update on
the newsletter.
· A reception for all boards and commissions will be hosted by the Mayor's
office on Tuesday, November 9th, 5-7pm, at the Lakewood Culture Center. Bob
encouraged commissioners to attend if possible.
STANDING COMMITTEE REPORTS
· Bob Zachman reviewed the standing committees for new commissioners.
Bob stated that each commissioner must be on one of the standing committees.
The committees are; Landmarks, Public Art, Programming, Outreach and Opportunities,
Alliance Allies and Executive committee. All chairs of the standing committees
must be a commissioner. A brief description of each committee was given with
dates and times of meeting.
OLD BUSINESS
· Cider Days was extremely successful this year with a gate total of
9,702, that is an increase of 22% over last year.
· Cider Days used approximately 900 volunteer hours. Bob Zachman encouraged
commissioners to volunteer for future HCA events.
· Bob Zachman has filed our 501c(3) with the State of Colorado. Hopefully
it will be up and running by the first of the year.
NEW BUSINESS
· Bob Zachman asked for nominations for the vacant 2nd Chair position
on the Executive committee. Three nominations were received, Laurie Maves, Paula
Rutan, and Caren Diebold. Bob asked each nominee to prepare two or three sentences
on why they'd like the position. Voting will be held at the November meeting.
· David Wiechman gave a brief overview of the new organization Lakewood
Citizens for Public Safety (Lakewood CPS).
· Bob Zachman stated that a Potluck will be held for the December meeting
at the Visitor Center. A signup sheet will be passed around at the November
meeting.
STAFF REPORTS
· Kim Kritz gave a brief overview of the BRAVO publication. Kim past
around publications of upcoming events and performances. Lisa Janisch, gift
shop coordinator, is doing a fabulous job at the Emporium at the Visitor Center,
she did over $5000 least weekend. The Holiday show will be at the Lakewood Cultural
Center, opening reception will be November 19th, please come and meet the artists,
refreshments will be served. Kim encourages new commissioners to talk to Mark
Smith, volunteer coordinator, and schedule for up coming events.
· Win Filipunas stated that they are still interviewing for the Arts
Outreach position. Robin Anderson had minor surgery and is doing well. A state
historic grant was received to restore the Valentine Diner located at the
Heritage Center. Meetings for the diner restoration start the first week of
November. The exhibit Spirit of Lakewood will open December 11, with the reception
December 10th, 5-7pm at the Visitor Center. Commissioners will receive an invitation
to the reception. A pottery sale at Washington Heights will be December 11,
10am-4pm.
· Susan Martin gave a brief update on upcoming performances including,
Catlin Tully, the violinist who will perform October 30th.
· Mike Buhler is now focusing on closing out the year and working on
getting new sponsorships. Mark Smith and Becky Kosma are working on a training
program for the Visitor Center. The rental program that Becky is responsible
for is up about 200% since last year and the membership program is up about
20% over last year.
· Niña Johnson was asked by the Youth Commission to help them
organize their meetings. Niña volunteered Bob Zachman to explain to the
Youth Commission how to run a meeting, explaining Robert's Rules etc.
Meeting was adjourned at 6:20 p.m. by unanimous vote.
