P R O C L A M A T I O N
NORMA ANDERSON DAY
November 8, 2004
WHEREAS, Norma Anderson has been part of Lakewood as either a resident or leader serving the public since before the City incorporated; and
WHEREAS, Norma has assisted the City of Lakewood through her service with the West Chamber Serving Jefferson County and as a director for the Regional Transportation District, where she worked with the City on several issues including light rail; and
WHEREAS, Norma was elected to the Colorado House of Representatives in 1986 where she served until she was elected to the Colorado Senate in 1998, where she will serve until 2006; and
WHEREAS, Norma has carried important bills that addressed Lakewood citizen concerns such as legislation that requires lifetime parole and probation for sex offenders; and
WHEREAS, Norma's tenure in the state Legislature has helped significantly improve the City through completion of road projects such as the Kipling Parkway that resulted from her bill creating the Colorado Department of Transportation; and
WHEREAS, one of Norma's important legislative accomplishments is authoring the School Finance Act of 1994 that provides more equal funding to each school district including the Jefferson County School District, which educates Lakewood children; and
WHEREAS, Norma has set a national standard by becoming the first woman and only one of a few in the nation who served as the Majority Leader in both the Colorado House and the Senate; and
WHEREAS, Norma will always be known for her talent as a strategic thinker, her fairness and honesty, her legislative skill of not taking the process personally and her ability to garner friendship and respect from both sides of the aisle; and
WHEREAS, the City of Lakewood wants to recognize Norma for her political courage to take a stand on issues that she believes is right despite any political consequences.
NOW, THEREFORE, on behalf of the City Council and the people of Lakewood, I, Steve Burkholder, Mayor of the City of Lakewood, Colorado, by virtue of the authority vested in me, do hereby proclaim November 8, 2004 as
NORMA ANDERSON DAY
in the City of Lakewood.
