Breast Cancer Awareness Proclamation

P R O C L A M A T I O N

BREAST CANCER AWARENESS MONTH & NATIONAL MAMMOGRAPHY DAY

WHEREAS, October 2004 is National Breast Cancer Awareness Month; and October 15, 2004 is National Mammography Day; and

WHEREAS, nearly 216,000 new cases of female breast cancer will be diagnosed in 2004 with more than 40,000 women dying from the diseases in the United States this year; and

WHEREAS, almost 1,500 new cases of male breast cancer will be diagnosed in 2004 with nearly 500 men dying from the disease; and

WHEREAS, mammography is the best way to detect breast cancer in its earliest stages with an average of the technology finding problems 1 to 3 years before physical symptoms can be seen or felt; and

WHEREAS, early detection and prompt treatment can significantly reduce suffering and death caused by the disease.

NOW, THEREFORE, on behalf of the City Council and the people of Lakewood, I, Steve Burkholder, Mayor of the City of Lakewood, Colorado, by virtue of the authority vested in me, do hereby proclaim October 2004 as

BREAST CANCER AWARENESS MONTH in Lakewood, with October 15 as

MAMMOGRAPHY DAY

and urge women and men in Lakewood to be aware of the risks and early warning signs of breast cancer, and to learn more from their doctors about the use and proper scheduling of a mammography for early detection of breast cancer.
