P R O C L A M A T I O N

Recognizing September 2004 as
National Prostate Cancer Awareness Month

WHEREAS, September 2004 has been declared National Prostate Cancer Awareness Month; and

WHEREAS, this year approximately 230,000 new cases will be diagnosed in the United States. In fact, prostate cancer is the most commonly diagnosed nonskin cancer in men; and

WHEREAS, approximately 30,000 men will lose their lives to this disease in 2004, and one in six men in the nation are at risk for developing prostate cancer during their lifetime; and

WHEREAS, about one-third of prostate cancer occurs in men under the age of 65 during their prime work years. Prostate cancer devastates families through loss of income, partnership and support; and

WHEREAS, research suggests that men could reduce their risk of dying from prostate cancer if they followed recommended screening guidelines, received examinations from a health care provider and increased the awareness and use of detection practices.

NOW, THEREFORE, on behalf of the City Council and the people of Lakewood, I, Steve Burkholder, Mayor of the City of Lakewood, Colorado, by virtue of the authority vested in me, do hereby recognize

September 2004 as National Prostate Cancer Awareness Month in the City of Lakewood and urge all men in our community to become aware of their risks of prostate cancer and to get screened for the disease.
