Dear Miss Smith:
This letter is to thank you for the critical role you played in saving the
life of your dad, and to award you with the Lakewood Police Department Citizen
Commendation.
Victoria, at about 3:30 in the afternoon of June 30, 2004, you called 911 to
report that your dad had "crashed" and needed immediate help. You
said that you were home alone with him, that he suffered from migraine headaches,
and that he was unconscious. Despite your fear for your dad, you stayed on the
line with the dispatcher for more than 16 minutes. You clearly explained where
you were, followed instructions, gave updates on your dad, answered a wide range
of questions, and told us where your mom was. All the while, you made sure that
help was on its way.
During the call, your dad regained consciousness and spoke to the dispatcher,
but it was you, Victoria, who helped responders to your door. I understand that
due to a physical condition limiting the use of your hands, you can only use
your thumb or middle finger. Remarkably, you dialed the phone and opened the
door for the paramedics when they arrived.
Victoria, your bravery and quick thinking brought the help your dad so badly needed. A supervisor in the Communications Center stated that she had never encountered another 4-year-old child as capable of performing under such difficult circumstances as you did that afternoon. Even many adults are much less capable than you were.
So, on behalf of the Lakewood Police Department and the citizens of Lakewood, I am proud to award you with the Lakewood Police Department Citizen Commendation.
Sincerely,
Ronald R. Burns
Chief of Police
