P R O C L A M A T I O N

Recognizing September 12 as Second Wind Fund Day

WHEREAS, Suicide is the leading cause of death among Coloradoans between the ages of 10 and 19; and

WHEREAS, Green Mountain High School suffered a series of student suicides during the school year three years ago; and

WHEREAS, Green Mountain Presbyterian Church stepped in to help its neighbor by starting a fund-raising event called Second Wind; and

WHEREAS, Second Wind helps pay for counseling for teens who are deemed at risk for suicide but lack health insurance.

WHEREAS, By the end of the 2003-2004 school year, Second Wind helped 53 students, with 40 of those from high schools in Lakewood; and

WHEREAS, with the support of several other churches and many corporate sponsors, Second Wind has expanded to provided help to 10 Jefferson County high schools and their middle schools; and

WHEREAS, thirteen therapists are also on Second Wind's roster to provide counseling at drastically reduced rates to at-risk students.

NOW, THEREFORE, on behalf of the City Council and the people of the City of Lakewood, I, Steve Burkholder, Mayor of the City of Lakewood, Colorado, by virtue of the authority vested in me, do hereby recognize September 12 as Second Wind Fund Day.
