PROCLAMATION
Recognizing April 18 through 25 as
DAYS OF REMEMBERANCE OF THE VICTIMS OF THE HOLOCAUST

WHEREAS, the Holocaust was the state-sponsored, systematic persecution and annihilation of European Jews by Nazi Germany and its collaborators between 1933 and 1945. Jews were the primary victims, accounting for six million murders; and

WHEREAS, millions more including gypsies, the disabled, the Poles, homosexuals, Jehovah's Witnesses, Soviet prisoners of war and political dissidents also suffered grievous oppression and death under the Nazi tyranny; and

WHEREAS, the history of the Holocaust offers an opportunity to reflect on the moral responsibilities of individuals, societies and governments; and

WHEREAS, the people of Lakewood should always remember the terrible events of the Holocaust and remain vigilant against hatred, persecution and tyranny; and

WHEREAS, the Days of Remembrance have been set aside to remember the victims of the Holocaust with this year's observance dedicated to honoring the memory of the Jews of Hungary who were deported in the final stages of World War II as well as the individuals such as Raoul Wallenberg and the War Refugee Board who tried to rescue them; and

WHEREAS, pursuant to an Act of Congress (Public Law 96-388, October 7, 1980), the United States Holocaust Memorial Council designates the Days of Remembrance of the Victims of the Holocaust to be Sunday, April 18 through Sunday, April 25, including the Day of Remembrance on April 18.

NOW, THEREFORE, on behalf of the City Council and the people of the City of Lakewood, I, Steve Burkholder, Mayor of the City of Lakewood, Colorado, by virtue of the authority vested in me, do hereby proclaim April 18 through April 25,

DAYS OF REMEMBERANCE

in memory of the victims of the Holocaust and in honor of the survivors as well as the rescuers and liberators. I further proclaim that we as citizens of the City of Lakewood should strive to overcome intolerance and indifference through learning and remembrance.
