CALL TO ORDER
Chairman Bob Zachman called the meeting to order at 4:00 p.m.
ROLL CALL
Members Present: Joan Howard, Jan McConnell, Peg Reed, Bob Zachman, Letitia
Williams, Barbara Tobiska, Jennifer Sylman, Dave Wiechman, Zach Matyja
Absent: Roberta Bhasin, Cathy Te Slaa, Donald Tallman, Chris Jelepis
HCA Staff: Niña Johnson, Robin Anderson, Win Filipunas, Susan Martin
Council Members: Debbie Koop
The public comment book was out and made available for public sign in.
APPROVAL OF MINUTES
Minutes from November 19, 2003 were approved by unanimous vote. Bob Zachman
made a correction to the executive committee report, the meeting was held at
11:30 a.m., not 11:30 p.m.
Bob Zachman introduced Johann Cohen who asked to speak to the commission. Johann spoke on misuse of conservation funds. He raised the question of what is the Visitor Center and what is its use?
Bob Zachman responded to Johann stating that the Visitor Center is a central spot for ticketing, history exhibits, art exhibits, community rentals, and provides office space for staff.
Niña Johnson included that the building was designed for exhibits about natural history, the environment, walking tours, and plant life.
GOOD NEWS
Bob Zachman gave kudos to Susan Martin. In the Denver Post article Best of 2003,
according to the Post; Susan picked the most exciting fall concert this year.
Niña Johnson stated that the architect for the Visitor Center from OZ
announced that we have been recognized nationally in an article for the design
of the Visitor Center.
OLD BUSINESS
Bob Zachman read the SCFD Resolution Letter of Support with attachment from
Kim Kritz.
Jan McConnell made motion to accept the letter. Seconded by Barbara Tobiska.
Passed with a unanimous yes vote.
"COMMISSION SPOTLIGHT ON PEG REED"
Peg gave a brief bio of herself. She performed a portion of the play Night Mother,
written my Marsha Norman. She was fabulous!
NEW BUSINESS
Bob Zachman gave a brief update on the Friends Committee. The folks that will
serve on this committee will be: Dave Wiechman, Zach Matyja, Cathy Te Slaa.
A meeting will be held following the commission meeting. Mary Masini will attend
the next commission meeting to update everyone on the process of designation
of a 501c3.
Bob Zachman clarified with Debbie Koop that City Council members do not have
to interview new committee members. Bob suggested that the HCA Executive Committee
and Chairs of each Committee would interview new Committee members. A motion
by Jennifer Sylman to have Executive Committee and Chairs to interview new Committee
members, then bring new members to Commission for ratification. Dave Wiechman
seconded the motion; it was passed with a unanimous yes vote.
STAFF REPORTS
Susan Martin - stated the Nutcracker is doing splendidly. There are some new elements in the show this year along with new costumes and chorography. She's starting to gear up for the Missoula Children's Theater in January. Will start doing workshops at Vivian Elementary School this year.
Robin Anderson - The Gallery is getting ready for January with the opening of Inside Look At Outdoor Sculpture. It will run Jan. 12 to March 26, 2004.
Win Filipunas - thanked the commissioners for volunteering at the Mayor's Tree Lighting. She will be presenting the Holiday Truck show at the Holiday Mart at the Pavilions. The Historic Preservations Committee meet this month at the O'Kane House and Washington Heights. Win received a grant extension until the end of 2004 for the ordinance re-write.
Niña Johnson - gave a brief update for Kim Kritz. Look for the new BRAVO coming soon to your mailbox. The Showcase gift shop is having phenomenal holiday sales. Niña received a call from the head of the O'Kane neighborhood association; she wanted to talk about historic designation for the O'Kane house. She also spoke very highly of Jim Olson at Washington Heights. Niña told the commissioners that Jim has made a real difference in the neighborhood and doing a great job overall. We will be getting about 300 pieces of pottery from Southern Colorado for an exhibit this fall. Also, been working with the director of ED, and CP&D to continue on with outreach to new businesses. At some point we might like a few of the commissioners to speak with these businesses and possibly get money donated to help finish the Cultural Center.
Meeting was adjourned at 5:30 p.m. by unanimous vote.
