Request for Council Action for Resolution 2003-65 REQUEST FOR COUNCIL ACTION

RESOLUTION: 2003-65

SUBJECT: Design and construction of a box culvert to enclose an open, concrete channel along the northwest corner of the intersection of Alameda and Jewell.

RECOMMENDATION: Approval.

SUMMARY AND BACKGROUND OF SUBJECT MATTER:

The existing open, concrete channel along the northwest corner of Alameda Parkway and Jewell Avenue is very close to the traveled roadway. Lakewood staff submitted the site as a safety hazard elimination project through Denver Regional Council of Government's Transportation Improvement Plan process and was successful in obtaining federal funds. The project will eliminate a roadside dropoff problem using federal funds. The City of Lakewood will design and administer the project.

Federal funds are available to install a box culvert to replace the existing open, concrete channel. The design is anticipated to be completed by early 2004 so that construction can be completed by the end of 2004.

Federal funds totaling $725,000 have been obtained for the project. The City's contribution is estimated to be $5,000. Administration of the project must be coordinated through the Colorado Department of Transportation (CDOT) in order to obtain the funds. The money for Lakewood's share is available from the Capital Improvement Fund.

FUNDING SOURCE: Federal Funds and Lakewood Capital Improvement Funds
