National Prostate Cancer Awareness Month


P R O C L A M A T I O N

Recognizing September 2003 as National Prostate Cancer Awareness Month

WHEREAS, September 2003 has been declared National Prostate Cancer Awareness Month; and

WHEREAS, this year, approximately 189,000 new cases will be diagnosed in the United States. Prostate cancer is the most commonly diagnosed non-skin cancer in men; and

WHEREAS, approximately 30,200 men will lose their lives to this disease in 2003, and one in six men in the nation are at risk of developing prostate cancer during their lifetime; and

WHEREAS, about 25 percent of prostate cancer occurs in men under the age of 65, during their prime work years. Prostate cancer devastates families through loss of income, partnership and support; and

WHEREAS, men could reduce their risk of mortality through screening guidelines, examinations by health care providers and increased awareness and use of detection practices.

NOW, THEREFORE, on behalf of the City Council and the people of Lakewood, I, Steve Burkholder, Mayor of the City of Lakewood, Colorado, by virtue of the authority vested in me, do hereby recognize

September 2003 as National Prostate Cancer Awareness Month in the City of Lakewood.
