CALL TO ORDER

Jennifer Sylman called the meeting to order at 4:00 p.m.

Members Present: Roberta Bhasin, Jan McConnell, Jennifer Sylman, Letitia Williams, Barbara Tobiska, Dave Wiechman, Zachary Matyja, Joan Howard, Cathy TeSlaa.

Absent: Donald Tallman, Peg Reed, Bob Zachman

HCA Staff: Niña Johnson, Robin Anderson, Susan Martin, Elizabeth Nosek,
Kris Anderson.

Council Members: None

The public comment book was out and made available for public sign in.

APPROVAL OF MINUTES
Minutes from May 21, 2003 were approved by unanimous vote.

Committee Reports

Landmarks - Did not meet

Public Art - Jan McConnell stated Roger Wadnell and Palavi Jhavari from the City of Lakewood Planning Department gave a brief presentation about a project to paint a mural for the Quail Shops using children's artwork. Several committee members volunteered to help do the transfer and painting of the mural. Barb Martin has raised $5000 for the Three Generations/Triad sculpture. Dave Wiechman passed around raffle tickets. The raffle tickets are $5.00. The Public Art committee brainstormed on several ways to structure the Adopt-a-Sculpture project now the brochures are complete.

Program - New chair for the committee is Cathy Te Slaa.

Out Reach & Opportunity - Jennifer Sylman stated that the committee reviewed their goals and will continued to focus on School visits/surveys, History Fair, SCFD Education Money, Volunteer Outreach, Reach-Out to Diverse Cultures and Reach-Out to Senior Audience.

Executive - Nothing to report.

Jan McConnell gave a special "Thank You" to those who attended her performance this past week.

NEW BUSINESS

Election - Commission members voted for the open position of Second Chair. Roberta Bhasin and Zach Matyja gave brief bios.

Mayor's Art Breakfast - Niña Johnson gave a brief update on the Mayor's Arts Breakfast. The Mayor invited a variety of community members to the breakfast and it was a great success. The HCA Commission will go forward with hosting the next breakfast. The Mayor's Art Breakfast will be September 16th, 7:30 a.m. at the Visitor Center, the Mayor will speak briefly.

Commission Meeting for July has been cancelled.

Potluck - Jennifer announced that there will be a potluck at the August meeting. A sign up sheet was passed around. The August meeting will be at the Heritage Center Visitor Center.

Niña Johnson reminded everyone that the August potluck is also for committee members. Bob Zachman wants to make sure that the commission members meet all of the committee members during this time.
Please don't forget to invite your committee members!

STAFF REPORTS
Niña Johnson gave a brief update on the Heritage Center Visitor Center. The structure is approximately 90% complete. The building will not open to the public until September. Just a reminder the SCFD 15th Anniversary will be held here on Sept. 21. The Lakewood Gallery will not be open within the next year, due to budget issues. We will be able to put in basic landscaping at the Visitor Center including an apple orchard. The Two Bear Sculpture has been installed, however the landscaping will have to wait, due to drought and budget issues.

Robin Anderson stated that artist Ann Kline has opened an exhibit with proceeds going to saving the rainforest. It will be up through the end of the month. The Metro Student Furniture exhibit will open July 7, and Red, Hot and Blue will open July 5. A reception for both exhibits will be Saturday, July 12, which will include a showing of West Side Story in the theater. Robin asked if anyone knows of an artist who would like to donate any art work to the Silent Auction for Art Fest, if so please let her know.

Kris Anderson gave a brief run down on dates for "move in" at the Visitor Center.

Susan Martin stated that the first summer concert was last Thursday and everything went great. The volunteers were awesome!

Elizabeth Nosek announced that the fall programming is almost completed. She will add a bird day this year and also will be expanding the Foodways program. Elizabeth passed out the Lakewood History Explorer activity pamphlet.

Meeting was adjourned at 5:00 p.m. by unanimous vote.
