Dear Ms. Logan:

The purpose of this letter is to thank you for the critical role that you recently played in the arrest of a dangerous burglary suspect, and to award you with the Lakewood Police Department Citizen Citation for Meritorious Service.

During the morning hours of March 26, 2003, you saw a suspicious man by the front door of the house across the street from yours. The man rang the front doorbell, and then went around to the back of the house. You knew that the homeowners were not home, and promptly called police, providing a detailed description of the suspect.

You had a cellular phone and walked across the street to provide better detail to dispatchers. As you did so, the garage door opened and you saw the suspect in the garage. He was loading up your neighbor's Porsche 911 with stolen items, and you noted that the motor was running. With disregard for your personal safety, you confronted the suspect and warned him that police had been called and were on the way.

Your intent was to prevent the suspect from stealing the valuable car, and to prevent further property loss, and it worked. The suspect fled out the back door and was apprehended a short distance away by police agents. All property was recovered.
A similar event occurred in 1986, when you called in a burglary in progress at the same home. On that occasion, a burglary was again transpiring when you called, and your actions successfully interrupted the crime and thus minimized property damage and loss to your neighbors.

Ms. Logan, the partnership of citizens and the police is key to the prevention and detection of crime. On behalf of the Lakewood Police Department and the citizens of Lakewood, I am proud to award you with the Lakewood Police Department Citizen Citation for Meritorious Service. I want to thank you for your alert observation and your willingness to become involved. Your role in the capture of this suspect protected many other citizens from the danger that he posed.

Sincerely,
Ronald R. Burns
Chief of Police
