Request for Council Action for Resolution 2002-85

REQUEST FOR COUNCIL ACTION

RESOLUTION: 2002-85

SUBJECT: Resolution supporting a grant application to Jefferson County Open Space for funding to construct a skate feature at the Lakewood Link Recreation Center.

ADDRESS: 1295 South Reed Street, Lakewood, Colorado, 80232

RECOMMENDATION: The Department of Community Resources recommends that City Council approve the resolution supporting the grant application to Jefferson County Open Space for funding to construct a skate feature at the Lakewood Link Recreation Center.

FUNDING SOURCE: The City has not yet appropriated funding for this project at this time. Community members have volunteered to raise funds for this project.

SUMMARY AND BACKGROUND OF SUBJECT MATTER: Neighborhood planning meetings for the Lasley neighborhood held during 2001 and 2002 revealed the community's desire for a safe and legal place for youth to skateboard. The Lakewood Link Recreation Center was identified as the most appropriate place for the skate feature because there is adequate space, staff of the recreation center can provide indirect supervision to the skate feature, and placing the skate feature at the Link will enhance the Recreation campus concept.

The skate feature is currently being planned with the help of young people and community members. It will be a relatively small facility at approximately 5,000 to 10,000 square feet. It is intended to serve local youth, rather than draw skateboarders from the region. It fits well with Lakewood's concept of small skate features throughout the City. The elements included in the skate feature will meet the needs of beginning to intermediate level skateboarders.
