RESOLUTION: 2002-84
SUBJECT: Resolution supporting a grant application to Jefferson County Open Space for funding for a second phase of improvements at Gary R. McDonnell Park.

RECOMMENDATION: The Department of Community Resources recommends that City Council approve the resolution supporting the grant application to Jefferson County Open Space requesting funding for a second phase of improvements at Gary R. McDonnell Park.
FUNDING SOURCE: The total project budget for the second phase of improvements at Gary R. McDonnell Park is $438,486. The grant application to Jefferson County Open Space will request $150,000. If the grant is approved, the Community Resources Department will request necessary matching appropriations from Open Space and/or Conservation Trust Funds.
SUMMARY AND BACKGROUND OF SUBJECT MATTER: The City of Lakewood City Council approved the Gary R. McDonnell Master Plan on September 9, 2002 (Resolution #2002-62). The master plan is the result of neighborhood residents working with City staff to identify the features that best fit the needs of the community. The first phase of improvements includes a pedestrian bridge over a drainage ditch, a walking path, and site grading. The first phase is fully funded and will be completed by February 2003. A second phase includes a sports court for basketball and informal roller hockey and an open turf area for football, soccer, baseball and softball. Future improvements may include a playground, group picnic shelter, restrooms, an equestrian area, detention pond and parking lot.
