ADDRESS: 480 South Allison Parkway, Lakewood, Colorado 80226
RECOMMENDATION:
The Department of Community Resources recommends that City Council approve the selection of seven (7) pieces of sculpture in the Civic Center Plaza as part of the Art on the Commons rotating sculpture program. In a celebration of our state's creative artists all works are from Colorado. The specific pieces of sculpture are identified as follows:
1. Richard Eversley, Colorado Standing Woman
2. Phyllis Beattie, Colorado Butterfly Kiss
3. Phyllis Beattie, Colorado Dorothy and Friends
4. Frank Iantorno, Colorado New Hopes, New Fears, Ellis Island
5. Frank Iantorno, Colorado Vintage I
6. William Vielehr, Colorado Human Glyph Series A
7. Anny B. Coury, Colorado Pseudo Moebius
Proposed placement for the various pieces is identified on the attached diagram of the Civic Plaza.
SUMMARY AND BACKGROUND OF SUBJECT MATTER:
The City of Lakewood's Heritage, Culture and the Arts (HCA) Division, in conjunction with the HCA Commission, established the Art on the Commons display and competition, an 11-month three-dimensional art-on-loan program. Up to eight pieces will be selected annually using a juried and invitational process. The display, located in the Civic Plaza of the Lakewood City Commons, will run from at least mid-September 2002 until August 2003. Sculptures on display will be for sale with a 25% commission of any proceeds going towards the future purchase of additional art for City of Lakewood parks and facilities. A $1000 cash prize for "Best of Show" and a $500 "People's Choice Award" will be presented during the opening reception, which will be from 5:00 pm to 7:00 p.m. Thursday, October 10, 2002.
The purpose of the Art on the Commons program is:
· To build community awareness of the aesthetic impact of art in public
places, therein supporting future permanent placements in City of Lakewood parks
and facilities
· To create a better visual environment through integrating the work
of artists into the development of City public works projects
· To seek opportunities for acquisition and placement of art in public
places
· To promote purchase of art by private business development and individuals
The seven (7) pieces recommended for Council approval were selected from a pool of eight works (8) submitted to the Public Art Committee for acceptance into the Art on the Commons public art program.
