RESOLUTION: 2002-11
SUBJECT: Award of Contract for 2002 Overlay and Patching Program
RECOMMENDATION: Public Works recommends that City Council authorize the City Manager to enter into a contract with LaFarge West, Inc. in the amount of $3,408,112.20 for the 2002 Overlay and Patching Program. It is further recommended that 10 percent of the contract amount, $340,811.22, be authorized by City Council in the event unanticipated work is needed to complete the streets scheduled for overlay and patching in 2002. Total authorization recommended is $3,748,923.42.
FUNDING SOURCE: Capital Improvement Fund - Long Life Pavement Marking
Capital Improvement Fund - Street Resurfacing
SUMMARY AND BACKGROUND OF SUBJECT MATTER: This contract is used to perform work on streets scheduled to be overlaid as part of the 2002 Resurfacing Program. This includes patching of failed street areas and placement of a new asphalt surface layer (asphalt overlay). In most cases, the street is rotomilled prior to placement of the new overlay, to remove excess asphalt and provide an acceptable profile to the street. The contract also includes installation of long life, inlaid pavement markings on collector and arterial streets immediately after placement of the new asphalt surface.
As the attached Bid Summary shows, the low bidder on the contract is LaFarge West, Inc. with a bid of $3,408,112.20. This bid is 2% above the unit prices received for overlay work in 2001. Public Works recommends the contract be awarded to LaFarge West, Inc., a qualified contractor.
The 2002 Resurfacing Program street list and map were posted in the cabinet room for council review from December 20, 2001 to January 4, 2002. Contact Chris Jacobsen at 303-987-7951 with any questions you have regarding streets included in the 2002 program.
