APPROVAL OF MINUTES
Minutes from August 21, 2002 were approved by unanimous vote.
OLD BUSINESS
Niña Johnson gave an update on the diner. Jerry Pfannenstiel is in the
process of restoring it. She noted that the gaping hole in the back of the diner
will be made ADA accessible, even though the radius is small and the individual(s)
will have to be backed out of the doorway upon exiting. It will not be moved
to our site until more work has been done.
Niña Johnson gave a brief update on the City budget. She was happy to
report that we got the full budget and are fully funded. Donald Tallman also
added that Mayor Burkholder called him and said he was so impressed with the
HCA presentation and the kinds of ratios and the cost recovery. This should
be a credit to the division as well as the HCA Commission. Niña added
that our division cost the City close to $1M and we raised dollars close to
that amount.
Niña Johnson stated that opening of the Visitor's Center will be delayed.
The projection now is for the groundbreaking to be on or about December 15th
of this year with it open to the public approximately August 1, 2003.
STANDING COMMITTEE REPORTS
Landmarks - Joan Howard stated that the first meeting will be taking place this evening. Win Filipunas added that we have a house in the Two Creeks neighborhood that could apply for a historic designation; however, there is no full committee now and no application form was ever created. She said they would try to get the application done in the next couple of months. A brief discussion followed.
Public Art - Jan McConnell announced that the opening reception for Art on the Commons will be October 10th from 4-6pm. Barb Martin said she has collected close to $1K on the Three Generations sculpture. Jan said the Adopt a Sculpture project is getting back on its feet once again. Barb Tobiska and her plan to look at every sculpture in Lakewood and report back on their findings. A brochure and map will follow.
Program - Donald Tallman said at their last meeting they had the opportunity to meet Robin Anderson, Arts Curator and she discussed upcoming exhibits. He said Susan Martin shared with the committee flier distribution which is through Colorado Promotional Distributors, a company in Denver that knows where all of the prime establishments are located. He stated that the LCC has been awarded $15K from the Denver Post which frees up some money for radio advertising. He added Susan shared with the committee her experiences at the recent WAA conference that she attended in Phoenix. She received lots of promotional material from different artists. She would like to have input and direction from the Program Committee when selecting artists for the upcoming 2003-2004 concert series; i.e. what would appeal to different kinds of audiences, etc.
O & O - Jennifer Sylman said they invited Edie Richey, Older Adult Program Services, Clements Center, to attend their last committee meeting. She went over the programs and support they give seniors at the Clements Center. The purpose of the meeting was to collaborate and market together; i.e., classes, volunteers and performances. Kim Kritz said ER will be doing a survey of the "older" population in Lakewood within the next two months to find out their interests, needs, etc. Jennifer said the History Fair was so successful that a second History Fair will be added in 2003. The Volunteer Fair was great with several volunteers signing up for memberships to HCA.
Executive - Niña Johnson said the committee did not meet last month due to her illness. The Mousetrap is up and running and doing well; however, we still have three weeks left, so the commission was encouraged to purchase tickets if they haven't done so already. She further added the revenue/sales are solid and steady. The gift shop is above projected revenue. Tickets are being sold more "as program basis" vs. "subscription basis." Kris Anderson noted that art classes are up 5% from last year. On a lighter note, Niña conveyed that staff will be painting the urban parks building before moving in and she would gladly accept any and all volunteers.
NEW BUSINESS
Niña Johnson said the National Trust for Historic Preservation conference will be held in Denver the last week in September 2003. Win and her were asked to attend a program wherein they were asked if we would be a satellite site for this national/international conference. Niña thinks it is important that the HCA Commission be involved and she feels we should be a host for a ½ day. This is something everyone can be thinking about.
Niña made mention of the upcoming events: Art on the Common reception on October 10th; we are hosting the National Ride to Remember for firefighters on Friday, September 20th. It will be open to the public, and the cost is a $5.00 or more donation at the door. We are expecting 2,000 people and there will be live entertainment as well. The money collected will help build Firestation #1. In addition, the next morning, the 21st, there will be a pancake breakfast for the firefighters while the Waggin' Tail Dogwalk is taking place. Should be a fun-filled day.
Regarding historic preservation, Niña Johnson said a presentation will be given to the City Council on October 21st concerning the following neighborhoods: Two Creeks, the Glens and Cloverdale. Win Filipunas will be giving the presentation on the Glens, Lyle Miller will present the Cloverdale and Sharon Vincent will present the Glens. Niña will do introductory and closing remarks.
Next week, Niña and Win plan to tour the Kellogg House, which is owned by the Christian Church. It is currently being used for youth activities, but there is talk of it being demolished in the future. They will meet to answer questions and offer any information they deem necessary in regard to historic preservation of the house.
STAFF REPORTS
Susan Martin gave an update to the commission on upcoming performances. The Thursday evening preview (12th) for the Mousetrap was a success - sold out! There was a nice full house on Friday the 13th as well as for the post-reception. She offered the Commission ½ price tickets for the Sat. matinee (9-21-02). On the 19th, Takacs String Quartet will be performing at LCC. The performance will be recorded with potential for broadcast on public radio. Beverages are now allowed in the theater. She continued conveying to the commission upcoming performances at the LCC. On-line tickets are now available for all performances; tenants and the LCC. She spoke about the new program shell that will hold all our programs. This shell complements the Bravo, subscription brochure and pocket calendar.
Mike Buhler said the PowWow event went well with approximately 1300 paid attendance.
They had 25 vendors with a very diverse crowd. Discussion followed regarding
the ongoing of PowWow. Mike said we are now in the final stages of Cider Days.
This year will be more free activities for children. Volunteers are still needed
for Cider Days, which is October 5th and 6th.
Cadets will be handling the parking this year for a nominal fee.
Kim Kritz reiterated the importance of volunteers and how badly we need them for the Cider Days event. She said the Bravo will be mailed on December 3rd (24 pages). She spoke about the cohesion of brochures, etc., and stated that the City Manager's Office did a survey of the City. There was not much about arts and culture - they sort of lumped us altogether with the Rec Ctr. She will get a copy to the commission. The SCFD Tier II Marketing Committee will be doing an e-mail campaign which will be going out the end of October. This is a direct mail list of about 50,000 - this will drive people to the Arts to Zoo website and then we can pull off that website to send mailings directly. The Cultural Center is on the front of the photograph collage that will be sent out. Tier II is also working on being a sponsor at the new Cherry Creek Mail Visitor's Center. One could come and buy tickets online at the Visitor's Center, which would link directly to our website.
Win Filipunas spoke about the diner and stated she had been taking documentation photos of it. The color is right on - royal blue - accent color, with the main color being tan. Jerry P is still working on it. The sun porch, the three bedrooms and lastly, the bathroom is the order of the upcoming/ongoing renovation at the 30's house.
Elizabeth Nosek said she will not be doing Middle School History Fair in the next two weeks. Robin Anderson is doing great so she will be doing that this year. There will be lots of apples again at Cider Days this year. She is working on Boy Scout Heritage Day, Halloween - a special thank you to Jennifer Sylman for 400 apples! The parade will be Oct. 31st @ 4 p.m. She added that Circle of Holidays and Cookies w/Santa are coming along nicely.
Kris Anderson said that when you attend the Art on the Commons reception, be sure to look at the Very Special Art (VSA) on the mezzanine in the LCC. It is extraordinary and boasts a variety of art. She also added that the showcases look great, thanks to Robin!
Announcements - Joan Howard said that on 09-19-02 @ 4p there will be a rededication to the WWII monument at Lakewood Memorial. Peg Reed wondered if we could do marketing in the Colo. Springs and Ft. Collins with Stonebridge Hotel (formerly Four Points), but Susan added that there will be another name change again soon. Barb Tobiska passed out materials on a benefit concert and chili supper presented by the Lakewood Arts Council. Cathy Te Slaa said the "50th No Way" campaign is underway and she has buttons for anyone that would care to have some. Donald Tallman said Bill Grubb, cellist, will be performing next Friday and Saturday at Augustana Arts - he can get discounted tickets if anyone is interested. Niña Johnson said she will be looking at different approaches to Art on the Commons. If ever in Englewood, take a look at theirs and give us some feedback. We will be looking at bringing in one or two massive pieces.
Barb Tobiska made a motion to adjourn, seconded by Letitia Williams. Meeting was adjourned at 5:50 p.m.
