Communications Center
The
Lakewood Police Department Communications Center is proud to serve
the nearly 150,000 citizens of Lakewood. We serve the city in an
efficient and professional manner. We accomplish this with dedicated
and individuals who are focused on innovation, integrity, teamwork,
and pride.
Our
communications center is staffed 24 hours a day 7 days a week, employing
a total of 37 dedicated employees who use a recently acquired, state-of-the-
art, Computer Aided Dispatch (CAD) system. Our telecommunicators
have the responsibility of answering and dispatching emergency and
non-emergency calls for service for the Police Department, West
Metro Fire Department, and other City departments. The communications
center answers approximately 800 calls per day, 200 of which are
911 calls. Additionally, the center handles over 150 officer-initiated
incidents, which include but are not limited to: traffic stops,
pedestrian contacts and suspicious vehicles per day.
When
the center is busy handling multiple calls throughout the city,
our staff is responsible for prioritizing these calls. Life threatening
calls are handled first, followed by cases where the situation is
stable and there are no immediate threats to life. While every call
is important to us, we strive to make our service to citizen needs
as quick as possible, maintaining our history of rapid response
times.
In 2005, the Police Department implemented on-line
reporting where citizens may go to our website to report minor
crimes such as damage to vehicles and/or property. This increases
availability of officers for citizens needing to report more serious
and potentially life-threatening crimes.
