Department
Co-Hosts Community Shred Day
The
Lakewood Police Department and Iron Mountain Information Protection
and Storage Company will host a Community Shred Day from 9 a.m.
to 3 p.m. on Saturday, April 25. This free service allows the public
to bring up to five boxes of confidential documents to be shredded
on site at the northwest parking lot in the Belmar Shopping District
at West Alameda Avenue and South Wadsworth Boulevard.
"The
public response and support for last year's Shred Day was overwhelming
and as a result we will be conducting two shred days for the citizens
and business communities as a tool to prevent identity theft and
fraud. The first will be held on April 25, 2009 and the second in
the fall of 2009." said Mike Becker, Commander of the Lakewood
Police Property Crimes Section.
The
Lakewood Police Department encourages community organizations to
become involved also. Starting with this shred event, they are inviting
a charitable organization each time they host an event to solicit
donations for their causes. Volunteers from local Kiwanis Clubs
will be at this shred event.
"We
believe Shred Days offer our citizens a tremendous service to help
prevent them from becoming victims of identity theft and fraud.
We are able to provide this valuable service as a result of our
partnerships with Belmar, the Alameda Gateway Community Association
and Iron Mountain. This Shred Day we will be accepting cash donations
to benefit the Belmar and Denver West Kiwanis who are supplying
volunteers to assist. We encourage citizens to take advantage of
this service," said Lakewood Police Chief Kevin Paletta.
In
addition to shredding of confidential documents, members of the
Lakewood Police Department will be on hand to provide free identity
theft and fraud prevention information. They will also be available
to answer any questions.
