Operation
Identification
Operation
Identification is a major crime prevention effort conducted by
law enforcement agencies nationwide. The Lakewood Police Department
offers the program locally.
The
program's purpose is to make personal property more easily identifiable
to law enforcement officials if it is lost or stolen. Engraving
your valuables and registering them with the police deters crime
in two ways:
- It
discourages theft and makes stolen property difficult to sell.
- Marked
property, if stolen, facilitates detection and prosecution of
the thief.
How
it works:
- Obtain
an engraving marker and inventory form from the Lakewood Police
Department by calling (303) 987-7105.
- Engrave
all items in an obvious location with CO for Colorado and an identifying
number. It is no longer suggested that you use your Social Security
number. Business and nonprofit organizations should use their
nine-digit Federal Identification number.
- Record
all serial numbers, make, and model of each item on the inventory
form provided by Lakewood Police.
- Photograph
items that cannot be marked such as paintings, antiques, jewelry
and glass objects.
- Cut
out and return the inventory form's registration portion along
with the engraver to the Police Department. Keep the rest of the
inventory sheet in your possession within a safe place.
- When
returning the registration card, pick up the Operation I.D. decals.
Place the decals in observable locations at your home.
- On
your inventory sheet, draw a line through a listed item if it
is sold and provide the recipient with a bill of sale.
If
you move, advise the Crime Prevention Office at (303) 987-7105 of
the change.
If
you are burglarized, contact the department on its non-emergency
number at 303-987-7111. Tell the responding agent that you are a
participant in Operation Identification and furnish the agent with
the serial numbers from any of the stolen items.
