The
Police Explorer program is affiliated with the Boy Scouts of America. The
Lakewood Police Department supports the program with Explorer
Post 226. The Explorer program involves youth with police department
operations and works to promote their interest in law enforcement.
The program is open to youth ages 14 to 21 years of age, and is
part of the Lakewood Patrol Division. Lakewood Police Agents serve
as advisors to the program, providing Explorers with both classroom
and pratical training. In the classroom, Explorers learn about
various aspects of policing including: officer safety skills,
community policing, investigative techniques, and physical fitness
requirements. In the feild, Explorers serve in a volunteer capacity,
and often assist with community functions, tours of the department,
traffic control, and a variety of other assignments. In addition,
Explorers are given the opportunity to participate in a ride along
program.
The
Lakewood Explorer Post also enters Law Enforcement competitions,
where participants are evaluated on officer safety skills, judgment,
planning and teamwork. Competitions include activities such as
mock field raids, rapid deployment scenarios, and hostage negotiation
situations. In both 2005 and 2007 Explorer Post #226 participated
in national competitions, where they won a variety of awards for
their outstanding performance and dedication to teamwork.
