Opportunities
Volunteer
Surveillance Team
- Volunteers provide extra patrol, help with crowd control and security
at special functions, assist with training new police agents, and
provide assistance to the department with sting operations. (Must
be a graduate of the Lakewood Citizen Police Academy class and complete
a 1-day basic VST training.)
Handicap
Parking Enforcement - Volunteers patrol parking lots and issue
summonses to vehicles illegally parked in spaces reserved for the
handicapped. (Must be a graduate of the Lakewood Citizen Police
Academy class and complete a 1-day basic VST training.)
Radar
Patrol - Volunteers are trained on the use of radar guns and
patrol neighborhoods where speeding is a problem. (Must be a graduate
of the Lakewood Citizen Police Academy, complete a 1 day basic VST
training and 4-hour radar class.)
Motorist
Assist - Volunteers work rush hour shifts (6 a.m. - 10 a.m.
and 3 p.m. - 7 p.m.) responding to stranded motorist and abandoned
vehicle calls. (Must be a graduate of the Lakewood Citizen Police
Academy, complete 1-day basic VST training and required Motorist
Assist training.)
Senior
Welfare Checks - Volunteers handle requests to check on the
welfare of elderly persons or handicapped persons and make referrals
for services or assistance as needed. (Must be a graduate of the
Lakewood Citizen Police Academy, complete 1-day basic VST training
and specialized training.)
Operation
Lifesaver - Volunteers assist with searches for individuals
who have wandered away from caregivers. (Must be a graduate of the
Lakewood Citizen Police Academy, complete the basic 1-day VST training
and specialized training.)
Abandoned
Property Pickup - Volunteers are dispatched to retrieve abandoned
or found property items and book these items into the Police Department's
Property Section. (Must be a graduate of the Lakewood Citizen Police
Academy and complete the basic 1-day VST training class.)
Puffer
Patrol - Volunteers assist patrol agents during the winter months
by distributing educational information about auto thefts to vehicle
owners who leave vehicles unattended with the motor running.
Victim
Advocates - Volunteers respond to a variety of emergency situations
and assist law enforcement personnel by providing support and referrals
to victims of crime. Volunteers must complete a 40-hour training.
Clerical
Assistance - Volunteers are assigned to positions throughout
the department needing assistance with data entry, filing, mail
processing, microfilming, receptionist duties, and case follow up.
(Completion of Citizen Police Academy is NOT required.)
Tour
Guides - Volunteers provide tours of the Police Department and
Municipal Courts. (Graduation from the Lakewood Citizen Police Academy
is NOT required but would be helpful.)
Neighborhood
Watch Block Captains - Volunteers are needed to fill the positions
of block captains for NW areas that have been established but do
not have a current coordinator. Block captains would provide an
updated list of current participants, and pick up NW newsletters
three times each year to distribute to the neighborhood. (Background
and CVSA test NOT required.)
