Lakewood Names New Presiding Judge

July 8, 2008 – Lakewood Mayor Bob Murphy announced that the Lakewood City Council has selected Anne Stavig as Presiding Municipal Judge to replace retiring Municipal Judge Tom Elliott. The City Council will make the selection official on July 28. She will begin her assignment on August 4.

Stavig is currently a deputy district attorney in Jefferson County and has prosecuted adult felonies and handled felony and misdemeanor juvenile offenses. She has worked on special assignments for the Crimes against Children unit in Jefferson County and also served as a member of the Jefferson County Sexual Assault Team, a task force of attorneys experienced in sexual assault prosecution and detectives from various Jefferson County police agencies.

Stavig and her husband, Hal, have lived in Lakewood for 14 years. “As a long time Lakewood resident I am honored to have the opportunity to serve this great community and I will work hard to deliver justice to the citizens of Lakewood,” she said.

The Council began the process of forming a judicial nominating committee upon Elliott’s notice of resignation and retirement on May 1. The committee consisted of three Lakewood residents, who are not attorneys; a designee of the local bar association; and a judge. Stavig was selected after a statewide search that included more than 30 applicants.

Stavig earned her B.A. from Colorado College and received her law degree from the University of Colorado School of Law in Boulder. She was admitted to the Colorado Bar in 1985.

She will replace retiring judge Tom Elliott who has served as a Lakewood Municipal Judge since1987 and as presiding judge since 1990. Elliott’s distinguished career in law includes such honors as the Annual Award of Merit from the First Judicial District Bar Association, a Lifetime Achievement Award from the Colorado Catholic Lawyers’ Guild, Director of Regis University and he was a member of the state Legislative Subcommittee to re-write the Colorado Children’s Code.
