Get a Free Civics Education

If you have ever wanted to learn more about how your City government operates, here is your chance. The City of Lakewood is signing up participants for its eight-week Civics 101 course that can give you a better understanding of government. While the focus is on the city, sessions also provide insight into other local and federal government operations.

The various sessions will cover general government questions, such as how City ordinances and federal and state laws get passed. Students will also get an opportunity to help design a budget as they learn about how the City spends its money. Hands-on exercises will allow participants to plan a development and to visit the Lakewood Public Works facility. They will also participate in a mock criminal trial and learn how to run a City Council meeting.

Civics 101 classes will be held this fall on Tuesdays from 6 to 9 p.m. in the City Council Chambers at 480 S. Allison Parkway. The course runs eight weeks from September 16 to November 4.
