Current Board and Commission Openings / Applications

Advisory Commission for an Inclusive Community (ACIC) : The ACIC currently has several openings for unexpired terms.  Members of the ACIC serve in an advisory role to the Lakewood City Council. In this advisory role, ACIC members research specific issues or topics of interest to the citizens of Lakewood and make recommendations to City Council regarding those issues for potential action. Members should plan to attend a minimum of two meetings a month; a Full Commission Meeting and a committee meeting. Board of Appeals: Two openings currently exist on the City of Lakewood’s Board of Appeals.  The openings are for a three-year term that will commence on April 1, 2018.  The Board of Appeals, a quasi-judicial body, hears and decides appeals from any order, requirement, decision or determination made by the Codes Administrator.  Meetings are held as needed.  Typically, the Board of Appeals meets four or five times a year for approximately one to two hours.  Members must be qualified by experience and training to pass upon matters pertaining to building construction.

Historic Preservation Commission :  The City of Lakewood has an opening on the Historic Preservation Commission.  The opening is for a four-year term that will commence on April 1, 2018.  Applicants are not required to be Lakewood residents; however, they must have a demonstrated interest in, competence with, or knowledge of, historic preservation.  Members shall be selected, as much as possible, from related disciplines such as the building trades, cultural geography, cultural anthropology, real estate or law, or should reside within a designated historic district.

 

The Historic Preservation Commission conducts public hearings on applications for landmark designation and makes recommendations to the City Council.  The Historic Preservation Commission also conducts alteration certificate review and applications for the relocation of designated structures.  The recommendations made by the Historic Preservation Commission are based on the criteria outlined in Title 17, Article 11 of the Lakewood Municipal Code.  The Historic Preservation Commission is responsible for drafting by-laws, operating policies and other rules of procedure, preparing an annual report to City Council and attending yearly educational sessions, as well as other duties as identified in the Lakewood Municipal Code 17.11.2.5.  Meetings are held when the commission has an item for consideration, with a minimum of four meetings per year.

Planning Commission – Ward 2 and Ward 3: The City of Lakewood has one opening for a Ward 2 resident and one opening for a Ward 3 resident on the Planning Commission. The openings are for full four-year terms that will commence on April 1, 2018.

 

The Planning Commission conducts public hearings on rezoning and subdivision applications, approves certain special use permits, and reviews site plans. Additionally, Planning Commission Members serve on the Board of Adjustment. The Planning Commission meets at 7 p.m. the first and third Wednesdays of each month for regular meetings and at 6:30 p.m. on the second and fourth Wednesdays of each month for study session meetings.

Victim Assistance Compensation Board:   The City of Lakewood has two resident openings on the Victim Assistance Compensation Board.  The openings are for three-year unexpired term positions that commenced on October 1, 2017 and will expire on September 30, 2020.  The Board considers request for compensation to victims through an application process.  It also monitors the Victim Assistance Fund and insures that funds are utilized in accordance with the law.  Meetings are held on the third Thursday of the month, at 8:00 a.m., in the Police Department.  The meetings generally last less than two hours and require approximately one hour for preparation.  Deadline to apply:  February 16, 2018 at 5:00 p.m.
