Lakewood and the Denver metropolitan area are located in a semi-arid, high plains environment. It is sometimes challenging to remind ourselves of this when we look around and find vegetation and other amenities typically found in wetter regions of the country. The high altitude, dry air, intense sunshine and wind causes outdoor water usage in our region to be higher than most areas of the country. In addition, a large amount of energy is needed to pump, treat and distribute the resulting wastewater, making water conservation critical.
