Recycling Center

1068 Quail St. Recycling Center

The recycling center is open 7 days a week and is closed the following holidays:  New Year's Day, Memorial Day, Independence Day, Labor Day, Thanksgiving Day and Christmas. Individuals and businesses are welcome to recycle accepted materials at no cost during the following hours:

  • Winter: 7 a.m. to 5 p.m., October through April
  • Summer: 7 a.m. to 6 p.m., May through September

Containers are available to sort recyclables into the following categories:

  • Scrap metal
  • Glass bottles and jars
  • Paper
  • Plastic bottles, caps, tubs and lids
  • Aluminum beverage cans
  • Cardboard

List of hard to recycle materials and recyclers

Bags containing recyclables and trash, electronic devices, pressurized tanks and hazardous materials are not accepted.

On-site staff provide direction on sorting recyclables, physical assistance when necessary, education on accepted recyclables, and operate the compactors.


Styrofoam peanuts, rigid blocks, clean cups, plates, meat trays and food containers can be recycled at Alpine Waste & Recycling, located at 645 W. 53rd Place, (303) 744-9881.  Separate white Styrofoam from colored Styrofoam and take off paper.

Rooney Road Recycling Center

City of Lakewood Environmental Services helps operate the Rooney Road Recycling Center. The facility, located in Golden, has received numerous state and national awards.  Owned and operated by a coalition of cities and towns in Jefferson County, the facility gives citizens a place to legally and safely recycle many household chemicals along with other services including:


  • Solvents, fertilizers, cleaners, waxes, insecticides, used oil, etc. (nominal fee).
  • e-waste - including microwave ovens, cell phones, computers, small appliances, printers, scanners, TV's and more ($1.25 per lb.; $100 maximum for TV's).
  • Automobile, alkaline and rechargeable batteries (nominal fee).
  • Paint (latex, acrylic, oil-based, enamel), deck coatings, primers, sealers, stains, varnishes, metal coatings are FREE.  No aerosol cans.  See for what can be accepted. 
  • Waste generated by small businesses, including electronic items. The Rooney facility no longer accepts yard waste such as tree limbs. See Alternate Organic Disposal Sites
