Speed display signs are recognized as traffic control signs. Installations of these signs is a petition process. Please note, several criteria (including street classification, spacing, location, traffic
volumes and traffic speeds) need to be met. The actual
installation time frame will be dependent upon the City's construction schedule
and may occur in the following calendar year. You
can obtain a copy of the City's Speed
Display Device Policy.
**Note:** The cost of the installation of a speed display sign is shared on a 90/10 basis with ninety percent of the cost paid for by the City of Lakewood and ten percent of the cost paid for by households in the defined block. A fixed cost is established yearly by the City that shall include the cost of labor and materials to install the speed sign(s) and if needed the electrical point of service. The City will maintain the sign(s) and pay any scheduled charges and fees after the initial installation. The City will commit to replace the sign twice in the event of destruction. If a third sign is destroyed the Traffic Engineer will decide whether or not to replace the sign. If the decision is to not replace the sign, the neighborhoods original 10% will not be returned.

How do I get a Speed Display Sign removed?
The same petition and approval procedures shall be followed that are identical
to installation procedures - see the City's Speed Display Device Policy under Removal
Request.
If the removal process is approved by households on the street block that
was originally defined for installation, then the City of Lakewood will remove the sign and make it available for use elsewhere in the city or sell it for salvage. No money will be refunded.
