Overview

The city offers a variety of classes, workshops, drop-in and free groups for those ages 55+. Most activities are offered at the Clements Community Center or the city's recreation centers.

Transportation: Available to ages 60+ via Lakewood Rides

Aqua Fitness Classes

Aqua fitness is a low-impact, full-body exercise option. The city offers classes which are available on a drop-in basis indoors year-round and outdoors seasonally.

Lap and Open Swim

Lap swim and open swim are available at indoor and outdoor pools throughout city recreation centers and at some parks.

Indoor pools at Carmody, Green Mountain and Link Recreation Center pools provide lap and open swim year-round. Outdoor pools at Morse and Glennon Heights Park provide seasonal swimming. View calendars via the links below.

Swim Lessons

Adult/older adult swimming lessons are not currently being offered.

Swim Teams

Some swim teams are being offered, including the Masters Swim Team, Lakewood Dawgs.

Arts and History

A wide variety of arts and history classes are offered to all skill levels. Programs take place at Washington Heights Arts Center, Lakewood Cultural Center, Heritage Lakewood and Clements Community Center. 

Clements Community Center offers arts classes specifically for ages 55+.

Dance

Dance Classes

Dance classes are offered at the Clements Community Center and the Lakewood Cultural Center. Cardio (now called Move With the Beat) and Western Line Dance at Clements Center are offered at a discount to SilverSneakers and Renew Active members.

Cost

No fee for SilverSneakers and Renew Active members. All drop-in activities require a payment of $2 for each meeting or the purchase of a passholder card ($30 residents, $35 nonresidents). A passholder card is good for one year from the date of purchase and good for all drop-in activities. Purchase a card in-person at Clements Center or call 303-987-4820.

Monday-Friday

  • SidePockets billiards and cards
    Everyone age 55+ is welcome to drop in for a game of billiards or cards.
    8 a.m.-5 p.m. daily
    Fee: $2/day or $60/year. Free for SilverSneakers and Renew Active members.

Monday

  • Clements Men's Club
    Men 55+ are cordially invited to attend weekly meetings where fellowship and helping the community are important. Drop in and meet some new friends! 
    Meets every Monday except holidays, 9-11 a.m.
  • Radio Club
    Come join other amateur radio enthusiasts for a weekly discussion.
    Meets every Monday except holidays, 9-11 a.m.
  • MahJongg
    Experienced players are invited to come to play this ancient game.
    Meets every Monday except holidays, 12:15-4 p.m.

  • Table Tennis
    Follow the bouncing ball to a friendly game of table tennis. All experience levels are welcome.
    1-3 p.m., except on the third Monday of the month.

Wednesday

  • Needlecraft Social
    If you like to do handwork, share time with others and enjoy a comfortable and friendly atmosphere, please join us on Wednesday mornings. We cross-stitch, crochet, knit and tat. 
    Meets every Wednesday except holidays, 9-11:30 a.m.

  • Table Tennis
    Follow the bouncing ball to a friendly game of table tennis. All experience levels are welcome.
    1-3 p.m.

  • Woodcarving
    9-11:30 a.m., and 1-3:30 p.m.

Thursday

  •  Coloring Club

     2-4 p.m.

Friday

  • Friday Afternoon Social Bridge
    Contract bridge is played with a change of partners every four hands. You will meet a host of new friends with a strong common bond: the game of bridge. No partner necessary. 
    Meets every Friday except holidays, 1-3 p.m.

Free Activities

Lounge Activities

The free senior lounge located in Clements Community Center is always open for friendly board games or cards. Work on a needlecraft project or a jigsaw puzzle. A lending library of books and magazines is available as well as vending machines.  

Horseshoe Pits

Clements Community Center has two horseshoe pits ready for action. Shoe rental is free. See the front desk during open hours to check out equipment.

Sewing Group

This group makes items for nursing homes, such as adult clothing protectors, walker bags and lap robes, plus layette items such as receiving blankets, gowns and pajamas. Donations of fabric and yarn are welcome. For more information, contact Arlene at 303-986-7921.

Monday Afternoon Movies

Join us at Clements Community Center on the third Monday of each month at 1 p.m. for a free movie. Due to space constraints, a reservation is required. Call 303-987-4820 or stop into Clements Center to grab your spot.

Pre-registration is required. Classes are listed online at Lakewood.org/Register and in the latest Community Connection catalog, which is available online or at any recreation center. Sign up online, via phone at 303-987-4800 or in-person at any recreation center.

The city offers a variety of health and wellness services to older adults. Activities take place at the Clements Center, unless otherwise noted. Pickleball and racquetball are offered at select recreation centers. 

 

Insurance-Based Recreation Memberships

Insurance-based memberships, like SilverSneakers, give great perks to encourage adults and older adults to stay active. Please check with your insurance provider to see if you are eligible.

Benefits include free admission to recreation centers, free general admission fitness classes, most aqua fitness classes for free, and a discount on registration fitness classes. Fitness classes take place at recreation centers and Clements Community Center. Visit the fitness and wellness page to browse offerings.
