Early Morning Accident Claims Life of Bicyclist

An 83-year-old Lakewood man died early this morning from injuries he received as a result of being hit by a vehicle as he rode his bicycle in the area of W. 6th Avenue and Garrison St. The victim has been identified as Donald W. Schaefer (09-22-29). Schaefer was one of two bicyclists riding together, the other of whom was uninjured.
At about 8:20 this morning Lakewood police responded to the scene following a 911 call from a cell phone indicating the accident had taken place.
When they arrived, police agents contacted 24-year-old John Holzinger (08-13-88) of Denver, who was the driver of a large delivery type truck that had apparently struck the bicycle while on Garrison Street.
Paramedics from West Metro Fire responded to treat Schaefer however he was pronounced dead on scene. The Jefferson County Coroner’s Office also responded and assisted in the investigation.
Lakewood police traffic detectives continue their investigation of the accident and have issued Holzinger a summons for careless driving resulting in death. Holzinger will appear in court at a later date.
It would initially appear both bicyclists and the truck were northbound on Garrison when the truck turned right to enter the eastbound on-ramp to 6th avenue, colliding with the bicycle. Detectives do not believe that drugs or alcohol were involved however they will wait for test results before making a final determination.
