Touring in celebration of its 50th anniversary with new artistic director, Daniel Charon, Salt Lake City’s Ririe-Woodbury Dance Company comes to Lakewood for the first time at 7:30 p.m. on Friday, March 21 with a program that includes “Gravitate” (2004), “You and the Space Between” (2013), “still no words” (2013), “50 Years” (1996) and “Everything That Changes” (2013).

In conjunction with its time in Lakewood, the company will teach a creative movement class for seniors at the Lloyd G. Clements Community Center, 1580 Yarrow St., at 6 p.m. on Saturday, March 22. This 45-minute class is offered at no cost to all seniors and is a great way to learn about basic movement that will include body-part rhythm exercises and basic dance steps.

Ririe-Woodbury (Ri-re Wood-bûr-e) Dance Company was founded in 1964 by two Utah women, Joan Woodbury and Shirley Ririe, who were both professors of dance at the University of Utah. Their passion for dance not only included performing, choreographing and teaching, but it also was accompanied by a deep commitment to the value of dance for everyone and its necessity in the education of youth.

Joan Woodbury and Shirley Ririe were active in the formative programs that led to the creation of the National Endowment for the Arts. In that fertile atmosphere, the company grew in stature and recognition.  This tour is sponsored in part by the National Endowment for the Arts.

In 1972, the company was selected as one of only 20 dance companies to participate in two prestigious national initiatives: the Dance Touring Program and the Artists in the Schools Program.  This opportunity led to the creation of the company’s education program, which became the national model for dance education in schools, a model that still stands today.

During the past 50 years, the company has grown from its beginning as a local entity into an internationally renowned contemporary dance company, having performed in every state in the U.S., as well as throughout Europe, South Africa, Southeast Asia, the Caribbean, and the British Isles. “The superbly trained dancers of the venerable Ririe-Woodbury Dance Company provide lavish displays of muscular control and mastery of detail that kept the movement stratospheric. If the body is fully invested, dance is never shallow.”- Los Angeles Times
