The recycling center includes a separate entrance from Quail Street to the fenced recycling area. Individuals and businesses are welcome to recycle accepted materials at no cost during the following hours:
- Winter: 7 a.m. to 5 p.m., October through April
- Summer: 7 a.m. to 7 p.m., May through September
Containers are available to sort recyclables into the following categories:
- Scrap metal (large bin)
- Glass bottles and jars (large bin)
- Paper (large bin)
- Plastic bottles, caps, tubs and lids (large bin)
- Aluminum cans (small plastic bins)
- Cardboard (cardboard shed)

Containers are still available for unsorted recyclables and for users who prefer not to sort their recyclables.
As always, bags containing recyclables, trash, electronic devices and hazardous materials are not accepted.
City of Lakewood employees staff the center seven days a week, excluding major holidays. The staff provide direction on sorting recyclables, physical assistance when necessary, education on accepted recyclables and operate the solar-powered compactors.
The recycling center was remodeled to provide more convenient access to the site, allow part-time site attendants to assist site users and provide additional recycling services to users in the future.

City of Lakewood Environmental Services helps operate the Rooney Road Recycling Center. The facility, located in Golden, has received numerous state and national awards.
The center is owned and operated by a coalition of cities and towns in Jefferson County. The facility gives citizens a place to legally and safely dispose of many household chemicals along with other services including:
- Waste generated by small businesses and electronic items.
- Solvents, paints, waxes, insecticides, used oil, etc.
- e-waste - including microwave ovens, cell phones, computers, small appliances, printers, scanners and more (fee may apply).
- Automobile and other batteries.
- The Rooney facility no longer accepts yard waste such as tree limbs. See Alternate Organic Disposal Sites
