About
Lakewood, Colorado
The
City of Lakewood, a major Denver Metropolitan suburb
founded in 1969, is just over 44 square miles and roughly bounded
by state highway C-470 to the west, 26th Avenue to the north,
Sheridan Boulevard to the east, and Hampden Avenue to the south.
Sharing its borders with the cities of Denver, Littleton, Golden,
Wheat Ridge, Morrison and Edgewater, Lakewood is Colorado’s
fourth largest city and has a population of just over 144,000
residents (Census 2000).
Lakewood
has grown up around 1950s housing stock and inherited many of its
public facilities from special districts that pre-date the City’s
incorporation. Rapid growth and development in the 1990s filled
much of the City’s available land and has helped to create
an increasingly diverse community, particularly along the border
with Denver. Lakewood is presently undergoing a renaissance of sorts:
the award-winning Belmar District development has helped to shape
a new downtown core, a new light-rail extension will soon run along
West 13th Avenue, and significant efforts are being made to update
and replace aged public facilities. In the near future Lakewood
will become home to a major hospital facility and is working to
revitalize its older neighborhoods.
