The Lakewood
Housing Authority owns and manages 159 units of public housing
located throughout the City of Lakewood. The families that participate
in the Public Housing Program pay rent according to their income.
In the Public Housing Program the families may select from limited
available units. The low rent charged by the Housing Authority
is subsidized by the U.S. Department of Housing and Urban Development
(HUD). If the family moves out of the subsidized unit, they will
no longer be assisted. The residents in the Public Housing Program
pay 30 percent of their adjusted income toward the rent and utilities.
This program also has adjustment factors to the income that are
not discussed.
Example
One:
Mother and
two minor children. Mothers income is $6.25/hour, 20 hours
per week (adjusted annual income is $5,540). The apartment rented
would be a two-bedroom apartment.
30 percent
of the income $462.00
Less utility allowance $ 47.00
Tenants rent $ 92.00
