Earth Day Celebration is a FREE one-day event showcasing companies, agencies and organizations that provide products, services, resources and information for attendees to make more sustainable choices.

The theme for the event is “Live Local.” Looking to focus on local businesses, food producers, environmental organizations, purveyors of local materials and the like with a commitment to sustainability, “Local” is designed to be inclusive of the Front Range and the Colorado region.

9:30 a.m.     Group Fitness Activity - Qigong in the Park
Discover the flowing art of mind and movement to enhance your total well-being. Based on ancient Eastern principles, these movement sets are designed to balance your life energy and promote wellness. The easy-to learn exercise sets are taught so they can be integrated into a busy western lifestyle.
10:30 a.m. Xeriscaping A-Z
Join Greg Foreman, the City’s urban parks supervisor, for a discussion involving how best to landscape your property in a way that addresses consumption of resources.
We’ll discuss creating outside spaces that provide 12 months of interest while addressing proper soil, plant species and mulch which are all major components of xeriscaping.
11:30 a.m. Efficiency in Irrigation
Greg Foreman will address how a stunning landscape can still be efficient!  This discussion will center on irrigation programming and application methods. 
We’ll dig into delivery types such as rotary heads, pop up spray heads and drip systems.
12:30 p.m. Rocky Mountain Ukulele Orchestra Performance
1:30 p.m. Nutrients: The Good, the Bad and the Ugly!
If you fertilize the stream will it grow more fish?  Of course not!  Alan Searcy, the City’s storm water quality coordinator will talk about how some fertilizers are better than others. 
What can you do to help the watersheds remain free of choking hazards?
2:30 p.m. Composting 101
Julie Elam, Lakewood Heritage Center’s Visitor Services Coordinator and resident compost guru, will lead a demonstration on the basics of creating a compost pile for your home garden.
Using common food, yard and household waste products, you’ll learn how to recycle these items into an organic material that can be used to enrich everything you grow!

Special Attractions

Special attractions at this year’s event include a climbing wall, music, and demonstrations on xeriscaping, environmentally friendly fertilizers and pesticides, irrigation efficiency, and composting. There will also be a fitness activity open to the public and an art interactive for the kids.
