Regionally, coyotes have become less fearful of humans and therefore more domesticated in their behavior. As a result, the Denver Metro Area Coyote Study is moving into the next phase to study the effectiveness of various hazing techniques on coyote behavior. Hazing techniques include noise-making and other threatening behaviors to return the fear of humans to the species. The hazing treatment will be a significant educational effort to get the public to change how they interact with coyotes as well as employment of trained staff to haze coyotes as often as possible. Lakewood is continuing to partner on the study and was contacted by the researcher to determine coyote "hotspots" in Lakewood. Other municipalities involved include Broomfield, Arvada, Aurora, Jefferson County and others in the metro area.
In February, signage and cameras will be installed in Belmar Park and the Bear Creek Greenbelt. The cameras will track activity and the signage will direct residents to report coyote sightings. Later in February, signage encouraging and instructing residents to haze coyotes will be installed along the Bear Creek Greenbelt. Signage and cameras will be removed from both locations in early March.
